St. Nicholas (ACROD) in Lansford, PA

I took these photos in August. They show the interior, exterior, and icons in the church.

Slava Isusu Khrystu!

Is that a Carpathian Rusyn Orthodox Church? It looks immense as though hundreds of worshippers could fit inside which is a good thing. I hope the Church does get filled up.

Take care,

Yes, this is a parish of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese.

For everyone's information: the Byzantine-Russian style icons were done by an OCA priest's wife who used to live in Coaldale--one town over from Lansford. On the back wall of the church, there are several large icons of saints associated with Carpatho-Rus. I included one photo of the icon of St. Mojsej Uhrin/Moses "the Hungarian," a Rusyn monk from the Kiev Caves monastery.

Thank you, Dave, for the info, it is my hope that Church is filled each Sunday with devoted parishoners. Such a large church needs a large congregation to help support it financially and to give moral support to the priest who serves as pastor and moral support and a sense of family to the other members of the parish.

Not to get off of the track, but we need to show more support and solidarity with our priests!

John,
Our congregation is only about 80 souls and about 35 get out to church. We have 7 students in Sunday school and a monthly discussion group that meets. The people are very respectful and kind and can sing up a storm.
Unfortunately, jobs are hard to find in this valley, so alot of people have left. There is a YouTube video about the #9 Mine here in Lansford if you would like to watch.

So, if you are headed our way, take the tour and come for church!

Hello Ray:

Slava Isusu Khrystu!

Even though your parish family is small, I am sure that there is a great bond between the parishoners which is usually a GREAT asset to a parish. Yes, I have heard that parts of Pennsylvania are suffering from unemployment, but that is the case in a lot of places. We need to pray for the economy of our nation.

In my parish in the Archdiocese of Boston we have hundreds of parishoners, yet even though we have a large attendance there is a nice bond between the people. I have to admit there are many people in the parish who I do not know and there are quite a few that I do know.

Our three priests are GREAT and we have two deacons as well.

I hope to be re-locating to the state of NY in 2008. I can E-Mail the reason why privately. Not that it is a secret. I hope to enter a religious community.

Peace,

This church looks really familiar. Is this anywhere near Mount Carmel? I think I may have passed it on the way to Knoebel's.

WOW! Knoebels. Now that's home (I live 10 mins away). Makes me think of summer, funnel cakes, and the Phoenix!

How does membership of St. Nicholas compare to the Byzantine Catholic Church in Lansford?

Is St. Nicholas a 'daughter parish' if I may use the term lightly?

It is one block off of Route 209. Next town is Coaldale and down the road is Tamaqua and the intersection of 209 and 309. It takes me 3 minutes to walk to church. The Byzantine Catholic Church of Saint John's is a three minute walk in the other direction. Now, that is a wonderful church with an old world iconostas. We have many treasures here. Come for a visit!

I love Knoebels Amazement Park. Our kids always had a great time there.

Is the Church far from Bethlehem, Pennsylvannia? I might be visiting the Bethlehem area in 2008. I have heard that there are some nice Byzantine Churches in that area? I know of one Ruthenian Greek Catholic one and of a nice Ukrainian Greek Catholic one? Are there any Russian or Carpathian Orthodox churches in the area of Bethlehem?

Been to Knoebels once and even though I'm not a roller-coaster fan I admired the beautiful wooden ones. The only ride I could handle - barely - was the Flume! A family place with a good spirit about it. The museum - of the park and of anthracite coal mining - was also cool.

You know you're in central PA when in the middle of the park there's a sign listing churches and Sunday services (mostly RC).

The day I was there some nice evangelicals - older couple - were putting on a show with singing and puppets on the big outdoor stage with other evos selling their music CDs.

Bethlehem has St Nicholas Russian Orthodox (OCA) Church.
